Nightingale
| Nigel Morgan has been using the score-writing software Nightingale for
the last 5 years. All the study scores available for download from this
website were created in Nightingale X, the Macintosh version for OSX, and
then converted into PDF using Adobe Acrobat.
The reason for using Nightingale rather than the heavy-weights Sibelius
or Finale is largely due to the flexibility Nightingale offers in the handling
of bar lengths and time-signatures. Unlike Sibelius and Finale the bar-line
is a graphic and the software will read time-signature information coded
into a MIDIfile. When Nigel is using the Symbolic Composer environment to
develop the compositional ideas in his scores the output file is a MIDIfile
segmented into what in SCOM are called zones. This segmentation provides
a map for time-signatures. The SCOM output file is then put into the Metro
sequencer and the time-signature scheme for the composition organised there.
When the Metro Midifile is read by Nightingale all the time-signature information
is displayed – flawlessly. In today’s music, especially in writing for solo
instruments, time-signatures are often unnecessary. Nightingale’s graphic
bar line makes organising complex rhythmic passages a breeze. The software
is also able to cope with realising complex tuplets, and even compound irrationals.
And the composer needn’t worry about the possibility of bars not adding
up when that is necessary – Nightingale has a feature to check the rhythmical
contents of a bar against its time-signature. The support given by Adept
Music Notation Solutions for Nightingale has been consistently brilliant!
