Experience a cutting-edge example of how new technology can create a more dynamic relationship between performer and composer - through an innovative approach to the display of Common Music Notation.

This is unique collaboration between the Gaudeamus prize-winning guitarist Alan Thomas, The Future Music Lab of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Computer Music (ICCMR) at Plymouth University and Manchester Metropolitan University's New Music Ensemble.

This FREE lunchtime event hosted by MMU's Music Department at their Alsager Campus features the music of the ICCMR's composer-in-residence and research associate Nigel Morgan together with one of the pioneers of American minimalist music Steve Reich. The concert includes Reich's celebrated ELECTRIC COUNTERPOINT prefaced by Morgan's PRELUDES specially written for Alan Thomas. Following the Reich are two recent works by Nigel Morgan: the world premiere of CONTINUUM WITH BLUES (HOMAGE À GYÖRGY LIGETI) for electric guitar and Active Notation System and SELF-PORTRAIT in a new version for networked ensemble.

The concert has been planned to coincide with a lecture Re-conceptualizing Performance with 'Active' Notation given by Nigel Morgan in the ICCMR Series 2006-7 at 2.00PM in the Dawy Building, Lecture Theatre 220, Plymouth University. Those attending Nigel's lecture in Plymouth will be able to hear a relay of the concert directly after his lecture and download a podcast of both events from the web.
